Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like your natural teeth. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. At the same time, the final bridgework or denture is designed that will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics. After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, Dr. King will uncover the implants and attach a small healing collar. Next, your your new teeth will be made, posts will be connected to the implants, and teeth replacements made over the posts. The entire dental implant procedure usually takes takes six to eight months and most of our patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.
Advantages of Dental Implants
- Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.
- Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t’ require reducing other teeth, as a tooth supported bridge does. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.
- Easier eating. Sliding Dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain.
- Convenience. Removable dentures are just that: removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures and messy adhesives and much more!
